CPUC Votes to Strengthen State’s Renewable Energy Rules
The California Public Utilities Commission has voted unanimously to strengthen a key clean energy policy in California that requires utilities to prioritize renewable energy over fossil fuels. The “loading order” policy requires California’s utilities to first use energy efficiency and conservation measures, and then energy from renewable sources to meet customer demand before they can purchase power from fossil fuel plants. California Public Utilities Commission Approves 1,000 Megawatts in Renewable Contracts
The California Public Utilities Commission on Thursday approved more than 1,000 megawatts in renewable contracts – including two wind and three solar photovoltaic projects – between Pacific Gas & Electric, Southern California Edison and San Diego Gas & Electric and developers. BACC partner PG&E won approval for a 25-year power purchase agreement for a 78.2-megawatt project slated for private land in Solano County; SoCal Ed won approval for three 20-year power purchase agreements for three new solar PV projects totaling 711 megawatts in Kern and Los Angeles counties; and SDG&E won approval for an amended 20-year power purchase agreement for a wind project in Imperial County. PG&E Received 19% of Generating Capacity from Renewable Sources in 2011
BACC partner Pacific Gas and Electric Company added more than 220 megawatts of clean wind and solar power to its mix in 2011 and signed contracts for 463 megawatts in future renewable projects, the utility is reporting. PG&E estimates that about 19 percent of its electricity sales in 2011 came from renewable sources, a number the utility expects to reach 20 percent this year. Read more here.

UC Santa Cruz Racks up Awards for Energy-Saving Library Lighting System
The University of California, Santa Cruz, is being honored for a lighting project in its Science and Engineering Library that is projected to save $51,700 a year in energy costs. The project was named the "Wireless Innovation Project of the Year" by the EnOcean Alliance, a 250-member consortium of companies. In August, the college received the “Best Practice Lighting Award” at the 2011 California Higher Education Sustainability Conference. UCSC officials say the school has a dozen more energy conservation projects slated for completion this year. Read more here.

EV Industry is Thriving – With California in the Driver’s Seat
A pair of new reports from San Francisco-based Next10 and Pike Research conclude that the electric vehicle industry is alive and growing, with California leading the way. In its news report “Powering Innovation,” Next10 finds that California ranks first in venture capital investment in electric vehicle-related technologies and patents and has the most electric vehicle charging stations per capita. In its “EVs: Ten Predictions for 2012,” Pike Research, meanwhile, forecasts more than a quarter-million plug-in electric vehicles will be sold in the nation this year." Read more here.
